Capitalizing on the late 50's popularity of Vespa and Cushman, who were selling scooter faster then they could make them. Harley Davidson developed the Topper in 1960. Its 165cc two-stroke single cylider engine was started with a recoil starter, like a lawn mower. It had a variable-ratio automatic transmission like a CVT called Scootaway Drive. Yes, Harley made a twist n go. Despite carrying the Harley Davidson name, the Topper didn't sell particularly well in a market quickly becoming dominated by Japanese machines. And it wasn't long before the scooter craze subsided, taking the Topper as one of its early casualties in 1965...
