True Classics: Rumi Formichino

Rumi was a textile company in Italy prior to WWII, during the war they made armaments, miniture submarines and torpedoes. After the war they went into the Scooter business. Their claim to fame was the 1954 Formichino or Little ant scooter which was reputedly designed by Ing Salvatti. The entire body (with exception of the front forks , crash rails and legshields) was produced in cast aluminium. According to Rumi's plans, the machine was to take the company into the newly formed scooter sector dominated at that time by Piaggio, with the "Vespa", and Innocenti, with the "Lambretta". This light weight well constructed scooter sported a smooth-as-silk, horizontal twin 125cc 4 speed gearbox.
